This story shows us what COULD happen if at some time in the near future, government is forced to relinquish its role in taking care of people in need in the United States of America. I'd love to think that the churches could absorb all the needs of the millions of people who would be up a creek without a paddle, but I'm not so sure. If people want to see how they can help keep government to stay "out of their business," this is one path to that destination. It may not be the only way to get there, and it may not be the best way; but it's A WAY.I wonder what would happen if someone encouraged our churches to live out their calling through practical ministries such as these. I also loved that churches took care of those in their own neighborhoods. It might be a pretty amazing way to live.
Well-written and imaginative. The world Terry Hampton built could be ours one day. What would we do if it were? Would it include other religions? How inclusive could it/would it be?

shows a good understanding of societies woes and offers forth an inspirational way of solving them. although it is written as fiction, it could become a realty in todays financial atmosphere. interesting and entertaining.
If all governmental support went away, how would the elderly, disabled and disadvantaged survive?
When the government can no longer afford the financial drain, The Least of These looks into the lives of several families after the President of the United States signs a bill terminating these programs.
The writing is clear and and for the most part easy to follow. The reader is introduced to several main characters in a few pages. It is a little hard to keep them straight, but once the reader become familiar their stories, things unfold in most interesting and unusual ways. Paths cross on many different levels as neighbors help neighbors and the community tries working together to help those left without hope.
Christian principles are used, as expressed in the biblical terms "love thy neighbor as thy self" and many others. This is a book all Christians could learn from, no matter what religion they associate with. It gives the reader an opportunity to see things from several perspectives. The reader may find themselves pondering how a change of this magnitude could affect their lives and the far reaching consequences of their actions, should similar events really come to pass.
The writing focus is on turning to Heavenly Father for guidance and relying on Him in troubled times, but it done in a "non preachy" way. The stories are related from inside the hearts of those who know and trust the Lord, others who are seeking for something better, and from others who have bitterness and hatred that is not clearly understood
Readers beware, once this book has touched your heart, you will never look at governmental assistance in the same way.
I found this book to be entertaining as well as food for thought. I agree that God gives us what we need and at times blessed us with extra. I have always enjoyed sharing what I have with others. This story has some truths to it and it puts a question in my mind "who can I help and share God's love we with"
The power of faith is revealed in this intriguing novel about desperate times to come in our country. Excellent story and excellent epilogue showing the future challenges faced when loss of entitlements make a large percentage of our population destitute with little recourse to ensure survival. Sure made me think!
This is a must read for all Christian leaders and those Christians who are concerned with the state of affairs in our government, ane the morality of our citizenry! While our government debates changes in entitlements, they forget that entitlements are legal rights by law. The changes must be made regarding a "false sense of entitlement."
Similar to the theme of "In His Steps," another must read, by Sidney Sheldon, the Christian Church, by the New Covenant Command, is the solution as illustrated by Terry Hampton.
Wow, she 'knocked it out of the park!'
Terry Hampton has drawn us a unique and wonderful fable. In a horrific economic downturn, the Federal Government has to cut off all welfare and social security programs. In one day, there is no Medicare, Medicaid, Social Security, school lunch programs, food stamps, or job programs. The world changes for those on the government dole and for those who serve them. The country wonders who will rescue the poor and needy--the least of these. Immediately, the churches around the country and in Springville come to the rescue. We see the world through the view of the people of Springville. Indeed, the world changes and the church becomes the means and the mode for this great change. We get to see this change firsthand through the eyes of many, but especially the Campbells, Becky Park, Dr. Hughes, Pastor James, William Kennington, and their families. In this wonderful account of the way the world could change in a moment, we see how the world should work and how it could improve. Ms. Hampton has given us an absolutely singular work and view of the world that still could be--get it.
